Captain Ashley’s diverse and extensive fishing experience and knowledge of boats, boating and the ocean has come from over 30 years fishing both recreationally and commercially.
He began fishing in Bairnsdale Victoria for bream and flathead around the Gippsland Lakes before his passion grew for the ocean and he started venturing offshore from Lakes Entrance chasing snapper and sharks on weekends. Before long he was looking for bigger and better fishing grounds and ventured to the legendary fishing port of Bermagui on the South Coast of NSW chasing marlin and yellowfin tuna. It was during this time he completed his apprenticeship as a qualified cabinet maker.
After reading about the Giant Black Marlin of the Great Barrier Reef Ashley moved to Cairns in 1995 to experience it first hand. He secured a job as full time deck hand on the vessel “New Moon” under Captain Kim Andersen. 2 years were spent working for Kim in which approximately 200 billfish were released ranging from 20lbs up to 1150lbs. They had many Japanese guests onboard wanting to target giant trevally, and this is where Ashley gained his passion for chasing the mighty GT on poppers.
The crayfishing town of Geraldton on the mid West Coast of WA was Ashley’s next port of call, where he did 5 seasons of crayfishing around the Abrolohos Islands. During their 3 month off season each year, Ashley chased Broadbill swordfish and Big Eye Tuna up and down the WA coast. He also achieved his Open Master V skippers ticket and MED 2 engineering qualification while in WA.
In 2000 Ashley moved to the Whitsundays where he ran day trips around the islands before securing a job on Daydream Island looking after and driving the owners 68ft luxury vessel “Champagne Princess”. He also ran fishing charters for 4 ½ years onboard the island’s 3100 series Noosa Cat.
In 2006 Ashley met his prize catch Kathryn. Ashley’s passion for fishing and his enthusiasm to take people to the outer reef, led him and Kathryn to start Sea Fever Sportfishing Whitsundays in 2009. For over 12 years now Ashley has manned the captains chair, with Kathryn in the office. Together, with their valued deckhands they continue to run a highly successfully business with a strong return client base!
Ashley is a current member of the International Game Fish Association as well as the local Whitsunday Game Fish Club in which he was President for the 07/08 and 08/09 seasons. During his stint as president, the Whitsunday Game Fish Club was the Queensland Champion Club for Tag and Release. He has been heavily involved in organising past major tournaments at the club as well as competing successfully in a number of other club tournaments from Cairns to Brisbane. He loves nothing better than helping people catch their 1st fish or putting someone onto a target species trophy fish.
